Nichols, sadly, died in Susan the soul of a mermaid the fire of a lioness shirt . so his virtuoso partnership with May now only exists on audio and video recordings. Which is part of what made it so joyous and poignant to get to watch May in action in Lonergan’s gorgeously elegiac play, whose superb cast also included Lucas Hedges and Michael Cera. There she was, as she had with Nichols, showing us all of her character’s laughable foibles, mining every comic nuance, while inhabiting her completely.
